CBTU Boston proudly hosted its second annual MLK Day Brunch on Monday, January 15, 2024, at the IUPAT District Council 35 Union Hall in Roslindale, MA. This event marked a significant milestone as the new CBTU Boston Chapter's FIRST MLK Day Brunch, and the overwhelming turnout of over 70 trade unionists was a testament to its success.
The gathering brought together a diverse group of individuals, including school bus drivers, painters, glaziers, insulators, MBTA workers, teachers, organizers, and more. The atmosphere was filled with enthusiasm as attendees celebrated the enduring legacy and economic vision of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
The event began at 11 am and extended until 2 pm, featuring a hot breakfast served buffet-style by Caribbean Soul. The $30 General Admission and $20 Union Apprentices ticket proceeds contributed to CBTU Boston's ongoing organizing efforts.
CBTU Boston members took center stage, passionately discussing the profound impact of Martin Luther King's commitment to anti-racist unionism, grassroots organizing, and collective action. The discussions covered a range of critical issues, including full employment, dignity at work, pensions, adequate housing, equitable healthcare, quality education, and the ongoing fights against racism, police brutality, and war.
Distinguished speakers added to the event's richness, with Darlene Lombos, Executive Secretary-Treasurer of the Greater Boston Labor Council, and Brian Doherty, Secretary-Treasurer of Boston Building Trades, offering their insights. The gathering also had the honor of hearing from Chris Brennan, Business Manager of IUPAT DC 35, and Boston City Councilors Julia Mejia and Tania Fernandes Anderson.
The event's success wouldn't have been possible without the support of union sponsors, including Painters and Allied Trades District Council 35, Team Solidarity - the Voice of United School Bus Union Workers, Boston Carmen's Union Local 589, IUPAT Glaziers Local 1044, Insulators Local 6, Bricklayers & Allied Craftsmen Union Local 3, and 617MediaGroup.
As we reflect on this powerful event, CBTU Boston expresses deep gratitude to its members and community supporters for their leadership, time, and energy in organizing an event that honored Martin Luther King's legacy and set the stage for future MLK Day Brunch traditions. Together, we continue the fight for justice, equality, and solidarity in the spirit of Dr. King.
